Antithesis against the Orban government, the hegemony of the right and extreme right wing, and the effects of censorship. Independent chronicling activity.
Reports on the progress of events and happenings of Hungarian society from a film documentarist aspect.
Human faces, human gestures. Likeable and dislikeable persons and events without commentary. The viewer, through the eyes of the documentarist holding the camera, may put himself into the position and life of others in time and space and thus may acquire information about other people’s lives which information are important and had been sweat for. Film documentation of more than 200 events of the history of the past two years of Hungary.
The Orban government has attempted in the last two years and is currently attempting to annihilate all democratic institutions. It has passed dozens of laws with which it tries to decrease the democratic achievements reached by the country since 1990. It is attempting to realize the renaissance of the state Christian nationalist ideology of the period between 1920 and 1945 against the freedom of the press and the media, the freedom of thought and thought expression, and all in all against the liberal heritage of the Hungarian progression. All this serves to have the right wing party, FIDESZ, ensure its ruling power in Hungary for decades. The third major group of the documented 200 events consists of civil society activities against the above governmental intentions and pursuits.
Among all of the events I documented, the topics of high and utmost importance (without striving for completeness) are the following:
Demonstrations and actions for the protection of the freedom of press. Attack on modern thinkers, attempt to make the scientific sphere conservative. (Character assassination of Agnes Heller and several active Hungarian philosophers, enforcing conservative Christian nationalist views against liberal thinking.) The activity of civil society organizations newly established against those activities of the Orban government which decrease human and democratic rights. Movements of trade unions. Poverty and homelessness. The consequences of the activity of the Orban government against the freedom of religion. Liquidation of religions. The governmental supporting of Hungarianist theatre, the story of the New Theatre (Új Színház). The conflicts and crisis situations created by and occurring as a consequence of the racism gaining strength in the country and having the implicit support of those in power. The paramilitary organizations belonging to the extreme right Hungarianist (neo-Nazi) party, JOBBIK, gaining strength and their pressure on Hungarian towns, primarily on the Roma. Events and demonstrations against the Roma. The Gyöngyöspata story and phenomenon. Roma exodus. Segregation. Governmental manipulation of the people with the intention to provide excuses for the extreme right. ETC.
